Samsung 4Q profits top forecasts on Galaxy sales
AppId is over the quota
Seoul, South Korea, Jan 25 (AP/UNB) - Samsung Electronics Co. said quarterly profit soared 76 percent, boosted by the popularity of its Galaxy smartphones, which outsold the iPhone for a fourth straight quarter.
But the company said Friday it expects earnings to decline during the current quarter because of seasonally low demand for consumer electronics. It is also leaving its 2013 capital expenditure at the same level as last year at 23 trillion won ($21.5 billion), underlining uncertainty about the global economy and declining demand for personal computers.
The strong South Korean won is also becoming a negative for Samsung. It expects more than 3 trillion won will be shaved from its 2013 operating profit due to the stronger local currency. Samsung's shares fell as much as 3 percent after earnings release.
Net profit for the final quarter of 2012 totaled 7.04 trillion won ($6.6 billion), a 76 percent surge from 4.01 trillion won a year earlier. Analysts had expected 6.95 trillion won in net profit, according to financial information provider FactSet. Sales rose 19 percent over a year earlier to 56.06 trillion won and operating income jumped 89 percent to 8.84 trillion won.
Increased sales of smartphones were the key source of its profit growth. Samsung, which overtook Apple Inc. as the top smartphone maker last year, said its operating profit from the division that makes and sells smartphones and tablets more than doubled to 5.44 trillion won in the fourth quarter, from 2.56 trillion won a year earlier.
Most analysts believe the Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung shipped more than 60 million smartphones, including the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II, during the three months ending in December, which would put the year's smartphone sales at more than 200 million. Apple said it sold 47.8 million iPhones in the quarter.
Hong Kong-based research firm Counterpoint Research said Samsung took 33 percent market share in the fourth quarter, compared with Apple's 21 percent. Another market researcher IDC put Samsung's share at 29 percent versus Apple's 22 percent.
The company's component divisions that make semiconductor products and display panels also benefited from a rise in demand for smartphones. Sales of mobile processors that power popular devices such as Apple's iPhones and Samsung's own Galaxy smartphones boosted the bottom line.
The recovery in the display panel division was also led by strong sales of advanced mobile-phone screens called OLED, which are mostly found in high-end Samsung smartphones. The display division posted 1.11 trillion won in profit compared with a small loss a year earlier.
Analysts said Samsung will likely see a continued rise in smartphone sales this year, especially in low- and mid-priced models where it doesn't face competition from Apple. Some analysts, including Young Park at Woori Securities, forecast Samsung smartphone shipments to rise as much as 50 percent this year from 2012 to over 300 million units.
Samsung executives said during the conference call with investors that smartphone demand will ease in the current quarter without giving guidance for the company's performance. But analysts said that Samsung could be little affected by market demand thanks to its variety of products that range from affordable to expensive devices.
"Even though they said demand for smartphone will slow down in the first quarter, Samsung will likely buck the industry trend and its own smartphone sales will go up," said Byun Han-joon, an analyst at KB Investment & Securities.
Apple, which keeps its iPhone price high, might see iPhone sales plateau in coming years as more consumers snap up cheaper Android phones.
Still, Apple's business has been more profitable because of the high price of the iPhone, which generates a larger profit per sales. Samsung, which makes dozens of handset models a year and customizes them for mobile operators, also sells cheaper smartphones and spends about three times more on expenses such as marketing and advertising costs to promote its Galaxy brand phones and televisions.
Counterpoint Research estimates Apple, though it sold fewer handsets than Samsung, took 70 percent of profit in the handset market during the fourth quarter, while the South Korean rival claimed 25 percent.
Samsung is expected to introduce a new flagship smartphone in its Galaxy S series as early as April, which analysts say will shore up its bottom line. The company said consumers seeking to replace its current handset and get a faster wireless connection through LTE networks will drive the demand for new models, easing concerns that sales would slow because of high rates of smartphone use in developed markets. Part of its strategy to command higher prices from consumers has been adding new hardware features, such as a digital pen in the Galaxy Note series.
Samsung's flexible display technology, which allows tablet computers to fold into mobile phones or bend the edge of the screen, is an effort to make its products stand out from others and to shore up its profit. But such technology, which was shown in public earlier this month in Las Vegas, will still need more time for mass production.
Samsung said its profit will be hurt by unfavorable foreign exchange rates this year. Robert Yi, head of Samsung's investor relations, said the negative impact from the foreign exchange rates will exceed 3 trillion won ($2.8 billion), with the loss largely coming from the firm's exposure to the euro.

Rough sailing for Bangladesh river-gypsies
AppId is over the quota
Dhaka, Jan 25 (UNB) - "Get off," she yells, shaking her fists at giggling, shirtless children. "Stop hopping. My boat will sink."Seventy-year-old Halima crouches and bails out water with a time-worn aluminum pot. Satisfied, she sits cross-legged on the bow as tiny waves rock the boat."The boat has always been my home. We roamed through hundreds of rivers," Halima says with a smile. Her teeth are stained black from years of chewing dried areca nuts wrapped in fresh betel leaves, with a dash of lime. Like many in ruralBangladesh, she uses only her first name.Halima recalls her nomadic past with pride and sadness. She belongs to the one-million-strong river-gypsy community of Bangladesh, also known as Bede.Rivers are life for Bedes. For hundreds of years, they have wandered along intricate waterways, charming snakes, training monkeys, selling trinkets, performing magic and healing people. Now their elixirs and amulets have few takers and their antics amaze no one. Pushed to the margin, the Bedes struggle to preserve their heritage. When the haphazard cracks on the boat became longer and its holes bigger, Halima could not afford the $1,000 needed for repairs. Unable to sail, she is living on an inlet of Meghna River, in Subarnogram, 24 kilometres from the capital, Dhaka.A dozen boats are tied to bamboo poles, stuck to the waterbed. Her ramshackle one-room boat has a tin roof, two doors and small square windows. Utensils, clothes, sandals are neatly organised. Her five grandchildren sleep here. A smaller boat houses a mud oven and food, where she stays with her son and daughter-in-law. She rows a small raft to reach the bank or move around."We use the river water to clean, cook, bathe and drink. We have no land. Where else can we go?" she asks ruefully. With broken boats and no other skills, Halima and her family are scrambling to find work in the mainstream job market, a fate shared by most Bedes.A nomadic pastHere at Subarnogram, children frolic in water, women wash clothes, and people bathe along with ducks under the crisp winter sun. The moss-green river is filled with water hyacinth."We believe our forefathers were Bedouin in Arabia, so our name is Bede. When they converted to Islam they were forced to settle elsewhere," says Muhammad Abu Kalam. He lights a hand-rolled cigarette, and between smoke puffs tells stories about their origins. Some say they are descendents of the Santhal tribe, others say they come from the Montongs of Myanmar or from theHimalayas.Bedes travel in groups for 10 months a year, stopping in nearly 90 villages. For two months they rest on a riverbank, celebrating weddings and circumcisions and resolving disputes. Each clan has different professions: The Sandar clan sells ribbons and bangles, Malboidhyas are traditional doctors, and Shaporas tame snakes.Muksed Muhammad fondly recalls learning age-old tricks from his father. "My primary skill is to dive into a pond or river to retrieve jewelry lost while bathing," he says. Mohammad is also a healer. "It is a mixture of naturopathy and spiritual belief."He has a collection of feathers, bones, roots, herbs, shells and coloured stones. He dishes out solutions for most maladies. For instance, a fish bone, brown with age, is used to add pressure and relieve pain.He picks a few seashells, prays and kisses them, and says, "If you tie it to your arm or keep it close to the breast, it will negate [the] evil eye."Stubborn illness requires esoteric arts. To cure asthma, he suggests a talisman, which contains the gullet of a swan and a piece of rope that was used by someone to hang themselves."Earlier, we used to earn well when there were no doctors in the village. But people don't believe in herbal medicines or magic anymore. We earned around 500-1,000 taka ($6.25-12.50) a day - now maybe 50, 100 ($0.63-1.25)," he adds.Backbone of the communityTraditionally, Bede women were the primary breadwinners, while men stayed at home. But this trend is reversing as incomes dwindle.Khadija looks much older than her 40 years, her face lined with wrinkles from age and hard living."When I was younger, I was a star snake-charmer," she says. "People clapped and gave us rice, food, clothes, money."Her stage name is Jyotsna, a name popular among Bedes, taking after the cult film "Beder Meye Jyotsna". This love story is based on a rural play about a Bede girl who cures a prince bitten by a snake. Now, like many Bede women, she wanders around the streets ofDhakaselling Tupperware, as well as practicing traditional medicine, which can include pulling teeth and cleansing ears and eyes.Khadija's mother taught her how to use a shinga, or cow's horn, to suck blood from one's waist to relieve pain. But her daughter Silvee, 18, refuses to follow her steps. "No. No. I don't want to do this," she says. "This shinga that they give is not good for people's health. I never let them use the shinga on me."Lost cultureThe Bedes won the right to vote only in 2008. Before that, they were unable to vote as they did not have voter identification cards. Bedes had once been highly regarded in Bangladeshi society, but their status declined as the country has modernised over the past 60 years.A K M Maksud, the executive director of local non-profit GramBangla Unnayan Commmitte, says, "People say the Bedes have disappeared. But where do you think the community went?"Maksud says 98 percent of Bedes live below the poverty line, 95 percent are illiterate, and children are married at age 11 on average. The average size of a Bangladeshi household is 4.4 but it is 7.5 for Bedes."Now they are seen as dirty outcasts. The Bedes eat vultures and live with snakes; both animals are looked down [on] in Islam, resulting in marginalisation of the community," he explains. Bede women are seen as loose. "They do not wear purdah and often touch the bodies of male patients, which goes against the dominant Bengali-Muslim culture."Bedes are caught in a tug-of-war between passion for heritage and abject poverty - to continue or let go their ancestral craftsmanship.A local non-profit, Subarnogram Foundation, has set up a school on a boat. Inside, 15 students recite English rhymes, learn arithmetic and the Bengali language."I want to study and become a police officer," says Rana, 10.But his father, Mohammad Abbas, says, "If I do not pass down the healing secrets to my children, they will be lost. We are born to be river nomads."-aljazeera.com

Ice9sMom won the Full Circle achievement in Alpha Protocol
AppId is over the quota
As explained, this achievement is for fully completing the game on any difficulty. The final mission is called Full Circle but it is where *SPOILER* you return to Alpha Protocol's base and finally finishing your conversation with Leland that has been going on the entire story's length.
It doesn't matter how you complete the game, played on Easy difficulty makes it fairly easy to run through but regardless i will walk through a few awkard bits on the final level that might catch you out.
Overall: If you specialise in Pistol mastery and get Chain Shot, it can be really useful for taking out bosses in sometimes one go, if not then the guides below will show alternative ways of going about it.
Battle with Darcy:
This is can be a bit awkward for a first time player, basically, after escaping the main inner base, you'll begin to venture outside. The first real problem you'll encounter is Darcy (Who for a douche for the entire game is pretty hard to beat here without knowing the way forward). You'll know when you encounter him, he'll bugger off and send alot of guards after you. Take cover as Darcy will try to snipe you, pop off the first wave of guards (you can throw a grenade to the nearby truck, it can take out a few and stop yourself from being blown up by Darcy). Once the closest henchmen are down, take cover by the truck and from here, Darcy cannot shoot you and the majority of his grenades will not effect you either, you will need to move of the odd one manages to get past your cover. From the truck, shoot the other henchmen that arrive and when finished, look up to your left and see a tower. Go a turn around the tower, door will be on the side closest to Darcy's location, if you have an EMP use it to unlock the door, if not double check that every henchman is dead and pick the lock. Climb up and you will see a sniper rifle, use it and catch Darcy before he starts to shoot back (You don't cover while using the sniper rifle, leaves you open to fire). The sniper rifle will catch Darcy pretty hard, after a few shots he'll be down.
Gunship:
Pretty much straight after the Darcy fight, you will be attacked by a Chopper. It'll continually fire rockets at you and it's extremley hard to find any place that is decent to hide in, the rockets will pretty much catch you anywhere. Once you start, arm yourself with your best close quarters weapon and follow the trail taking out enemies as they come, keep moving though or you will be taken down by the chopper. Once you come across a courtyard underneath the Gunship's location, go to the bunker at the far end, this is the best spot to avoid being shot at by the gunship and also to take out all henchmen before moving on to destroy the chopper itself. Now listen for the beep, it'll let you know when the missiles are coming, when one hits your hiding bunker, run to find several rocket launchers in the area. There is one by your hiding bunker, one in each other bunker, there is also health to be found on the side of one of these bunkers aswell. After a few shots, you'll see it smoking, take cover and blast it with the assault rifle (If you have it) to finish it off. If you don't have an assault rifle, then you'll have to keep looking for more launchers, which may be right down the trail you came from.
Westridge/Leland:
This, in my opinion, is the easiest of all the fights. As soon as it begins, run forwards and take the first left, take cover here in one of the jut outs in the wall. Proceed to take out any henchmen threats close to you, from here (you may have to back out of cover a bit) you can get a decent view of Westridge/Leland without him doing any damage do you. Use your best ranged weapon and clock him with a few headshots, personally i did this battle without being damaged at all by Westridge/Leland or his henchmen.
That's it, to be honest it's pretty easy to obtain this achievement but if you're an average skilled gamer like myself, then i hope at least this'll help you out. If you are stuck on any of the mission's before this, there are guides for those missions on here also.

H&M wants to promote new water management strategy in Bangladesh
AppId is over the quota
Dhaka, Jan 25 (UNB) - The citizens of Dhaka, Bangladesh, know a thing or two about freshwater. They know there isn't much of it, for starters. And they know that what exists isn't very fresh. And much of that has to do with the local textile industry.Bangladesh has more than 1,700 washing, dyeing and finishing units, many of them clustered around the capital. Together, they consume 1,500bn litres of water, much of which is then returned as chemically-charged waste.Clothing retailer H&M says it wants to help. Many of the clothes in its high street stores started life in Bangladesh. Many others originate in China's textile belt where similar water problems are unfolding. To put that right, the Swedish clothing giant has unveiled what it says is an ambitious water management strategy. "This is about stewardship, meaning that we want to become a leader to take responsibility in the whole value chain," says Helena Helmersson, H&M's head of sustainability. The strategy includes 30 water-connected objectives and activities in five different focus areas: raising awareness around water, increasing knowledge about water impacts in the value chain, internal actions around water management, engaging external stakeholders, and influencing governments on water policy. The strategy will cover Bangladesh as well as other operations in China and Asia. It's a laudable ambition. But will it work? There is evidence for hope. First, the strategy doesn't come out of the blue. H&M has a steady track record on tackling water issues, dating back to 2005 when it joined theBetter Cotton Initiative. It can claim some notable successes too. In Bangladesh, for example, its main denim manufacturers cut water use by a third simply by cutting out unnecessary washes – the equivalent of by 300m litres. The high-street brand is teaming up with WWF and from H&M's perspective, the environmental conservation charity brings the local expertise and technical knowledge that it lacks in-house. For WWF, it's an opportunity to move from "ad hoc and piecemeal" engagement with the textile sector to a more "cohesive strategy".As WWF's fresh water manager Stuart Orr explains: "We're not going to change the world through [changing] one company at a time. We hope that these more holistic partnerships … will generate a stronger strategy built on everything we've learned and everything that companies are grappling with."H&M is not the only apparel brand to make a push for water efficiency asLevi's Water Challenges aheadSuppliers, rightly, find themselves at the top of H&M's to-do list. In the first instance, the company has committed to engage 190 of its largest garment producers. That's no small feat, but it still leaves 560 direct suppliers waiting in line.Further back in the chain, there are fabric producers to consider too. H&M's alliance with the Better Cotton Initiative is helping to address water-use issues at farm level. Helmersson admits that these efforts will need to "increase quite fast" if BCI members are going to meet their goal of 100% cotton from sustainable sources by 2020. Cotton, it needs to be noted, is only part of H&M's fabric mix.One big sticking point when it comes to reducing water impacts in the garment supply chain is technological innovation. "There's some research in this area, but the challenge is finding the right innovations and scaling them up", says Helmersson.Working across industry marks another big challenge. H&M says it hopes to "inspire" others to follow its lead. Again, it's a good aim but retail brands are a notoriously jealous lot. With few wanting to play second fiddle, industry-wide initiatives tend to be the most effective way forward.Bangladesh boasts a model case already in the International Finance Corporation's cross-sector Partnership for Cleaner Textile, which involves 200 garment factories and 15 brands.Although the strategy has aims and a to-do list, the company says they haven't created targets – another area that they may need to build on to achieve their ambitions. If H&M's new partnership is to achieve its "holistic" ambitions it needs to look up the value chain too. Customers use water directly in clothes washing and indirectly when throwing them away. Before it tackles changes in consumer behaviour, it needs to get its own employees on board, Helmersson admits. The retailer is therefore planning a communications blitz to all its 94,000 staff this year around water use and sustainability more generally. The last element in H&M's water strategy is public policy. As Helmersson explains: "It's crucial to have a good dialogue with policy makers, but we need to find ways to collaborate with others to make that happen." She hopes WWF can help here. Realistically, some bigger hitters might be needed too. Wastewater treatment isn't mandatory for Bangladesh's textile industry at present, for instance. If politicians really cared, they could change that tomorrow. It's changing the initial "if" that's tricky. For its part, WWF is under no illusions about the challenges that lie ahead. "Looking at water is a pretty daunting prospect for any company", says Orr. "You don't solve these issues in five minutes. They take a lot of time, a lot of dialogue, a lot of repetitive action."H&M and WWF have given themselves three years to get cracking. In fashion cycles, that's a lifetime. Those in China and Bangladesh's textile regions have every right to think the same. Is it worth the wait? They'll be looking to groundwater levels to decide.Source: The Guardian

Egypt opposition to rally on revolution anniversary
AppId is over the quota
Dhaka, Jan 25 (UNB) - President Mohammed Morsi's opponents plan a rally, accusing the Islamist leader of betraying the revolution - a claim Mr Morsi denies.
Instead, he urged the nation to mark the revolution in a "peaceful way".
Mubarak, 84, was jailed for life over the deaths of some 850 protesters.
On Thursday evening, police clashed with protesters who tried to remove barriers blocking a road to Tahrir Square.
Mr Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood party has not officially called for its own street rallies. It plans to mark the revolution by launching charitable and social initiatives.
Earlier this month a court ordered a retrial for former President Mubarak.
Economic crisis
The opposition says it expects large crowds to gather in the Tahrir Square later on Friday.
It accuses Mr Morsi of being autocratic and driving through a new constitution that favours Islamists and does not sufficiently protect the rights of women or Christians.
The new government is also being blamed for a deepening economic crisis.
Mohamed ElBaradei, a leading opposition figure and former head of the UN atomic agency, wrote on Twitter ahead of the planned rally: "Go out into the squares to finally achieve the objectives of the revolution."
Similar protests are expected in other Egyptian cities.
President Morsi and his party reject the opposition's accusations as unfair, instead calling for a national dialogue.
Last month, Mr Morsi described the new constitution as historic and also said that boosting Egypt's economy was his priority.
He also admitted that mistakes had been made but insisted he would never make a decision except in the interests of the country.
