Amar Ekushey to be celebrated in Sri Lanka

Dhaka, Feb 20 (UNB) - Bangladesh High Commission in Colombo is going to celebrate Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day on Thursday in collaboration with the Department of Official Languages of Sri Lanka to propagate the message of respect for each other’s culture and language in pursuit of national unity and inclusive development.

The programme will be held at the joint invitation of Minister of National Languages and Social Integration Vasudeva Nanayakkara, and Bangladesh High Commissioner Mohammad Sufiur Rahman, according to a message received here on Wednesday.

The Department of Official Languages has organised a nationwide essay competition on the significance of the Day among the school students in two categories in Sinhala and Tamil languages.

The programme also includes discussion and traditional dance, depicting various cultures of Sri Lanka.

Minister for Justice Rauff Hakeem, Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Douglas Devananda and Minister of Culture and Arts T B Ekanayake are expected to take part in the discussion. high officials, diplomats, linguist, academics, media personalities, and elites are invited to attend.

The programme of the Day will begin with the lowering of the national flag at half-mast in the morning at the Chancery, followed by a discussion session and munajat.
