Dhaka, Feb 25 (UNB) – Accusing the police of killing people like birds for protesting the denigration of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SM), SCBA president Advocate Joynul Abedin on Monday demanded resignation of Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir if he fails to stop the killing within a week.

“Police stormed into a village in Singair of Manikganj during hartal on Sunday and shot people to death like birds. The minister has to take the responsibility for the killings. He must step down if he fails to stop the killing within a week,” he said.

The Supreme Court Bar Association chief was addressing a press conference at the SCBA office.

Terming the killings of people ‘utter violation’ of human rights, Joynul said they would not sit idle if those continue. “Resistance will have to be put up in every bar across the country.”

After the publications of reports on the defiling of the Prophet on some newspapers, he said, the government should have taken action against the culprits after proper investigation.

“Instead, the government is killing people who have taken to the streets protesting the anti-Islam campaign,” the SCBA president said, adding that the police have no right to fire shots on any citizen of the country.

Denouncing Law Minister Shafique Ahmed’s remarks that a writ petition pending with the High Court about banning the politics of Jamaat would be disposed of in two weeks, he said, “How could he say that? There’s much apprehension that his remarks may influence the court.”

Joynul also said the lawyers who are demanding the resignation of Justice Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan are living in fool’s paradise. “The Justice only distributed the copies of a report as he got hurt as a Muslim at the news. It’s not violation of conduct. There’s nothing to form a supreme judicial council.”
