Dhaka, Feb 1 (UNB) – Claiming that writing articles ‘against corruption’ does not tantamount to sedition, BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah on Friday said denouncing the existence of the state can only be considered as treason.
“Denouncing the existence of the state or making seditious remarks can only be considered as treason,” he said while speaking at a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club in the city.
Dhaka city unit of Jatiyatabadi Matsojibi Dal organised the programme to press for unconditional release and withdrawal of ‘false’ cases filed against BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the BNP leader said: “The present Prime Minister also wrote the same type of article when she was the opposition leader and it was published in the foreign media.”
The Washington Times on January 30 published Khaleda Zia’s article, headlined ‘The thankless role in saving democracy in Bangladesh’.
Environment and Forest Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Thursday said that opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s call for `foreign intervention into the country’s politics tantamount to sedition’.
Senior lawmakers, including ministers, also blasted Khaleda Zia in Parliament on Thursday for her ‘derogatory’ article in Washington Times and termed it an act against the country’s independence and sovereignty.
